Yesterday RAIN sponsored a conference in NYC to highlight trends in online audio content, platforms and listening, and then tied that with the value of advertising. There was an excellent cross-section representation from the various and related fields of expertise and overall it turned out to be a valuable experience. This year at SurferNETWORK was one of tremendous progress and new challenges. Several Patents in streaming media technology were issued by the US Patent Office; significant upgrades were made to the listener experience with the Music Trivia Player; and we invested a significant amount of time and money into a complete overhaul of our infrastructure, both hardware and software, which dramatically enhanced our services. Unfortunately, as with anything new and improved, it came with challenges – I apologize for any inconvenience caused by these upgrades. Exactly 15 years ago, on October 15, 1998, my partner Harry Emerson and I formed a company that we soon named SurferNETWORK.
Our vision was to create a ‘Just Like Radio’ experience for radio stations broadcasting on the Internet – a lofty goal since buffering and waiting was the rule. Most of America still connected to the Internet using dial up services, if they connected at all. Continue reading
Forecasters are calling for a cold winter ahead, but the signs of a warming economy in America are cause for optimism. Recently, the unemployment rate took a slight tick down – potential good news. With an election upon us, we see bold new ideas and the potential to accelerate economic development. At minimum all of the election related activities, advertising campaigns and the associated dollars spent, will be a healthy boost to the economy. Please allow me to reflect back on the past year and look ahead to what 2012 holds, and how it will support the Radio Industry.
